Rubbings of Han Dynasty Stone Reliefs

Overview

The collection in this database consists of rubbings of Han Dynasty stone reliefs from the Fu Ssu-nien Library. It comprises approximately 1,500 items. These rubbings were mainly taken from stone images or brick images found in the remains of Han Dynasty buildings such as tombs, coffins, shrines, sepulchers, and monuments with brick structures, unearthed in various locations in Shandong, Henan, Sichuan, Jiangsu, and other areas.
Most of these items were acquired by senior scholars, including Fu Ssu-nien, Xu Zhongshu, Dong Zuobin, and Lao Gan, during the period from 1928 (the establishment of the institute) to 1937 (during the War of Resistance Against Japan). They obtained these rubbings through gifts, exchanges, purchases, or rubbings made during field surveys. Notably, many of the original stone reliefs from the Han Dynasty in mainland China were severely damaged or no longer exist, particularly after the Cultural Revolution in the 1950s. These early rubbings provide valuable reference material and supporting evidence for scholars in terms of detailed information, making them extremely precious.
This database has a total of 1,551 digitized records available for open searching.
